Loteria and Metaphors

The Beverly ProjectChimMaya Gallery Annex

Luis Delgado Qualtrough, Los Deseos

The Beverly Project is pleased to present ‘Lotería and Metaphors’.
Curated by William Moreno, the exhibit features a contemporary interpretation of the popular Mexican game-of-chance. Traditional Lotería and its iconic pictograms are popular elements in Mexican folk and contemporary art. Its playing deck is composed of a set of fifty-four different images, akin to the Tarot, that can be played for divination and self-enlightenment. The cards typically depict metaphors of universal human values and attributes focusing on the relationships between man and nature and the structure of society.

The exhibit includes the first Los Angeles showing of Luis Delgado Qualtrough’s silver gelatin photograph series, The Cosmological Lotería. Qualtrough’s interpretation offers a decidedly contemporary spin and currency to the game. Imbued with a sense of irony, this adaptation challenges conventional notions of entertainment and modern life.

Also on view will be a series of large scale prints that use metaphor in alternate format. Created from found representations of iconic body parts, these collaged images pose age-old questions on identity and persona. Qualtrough’s work is concerned with observation, interpretation and narrative. His work is included in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pennsylvania, Museet for Fotokunst, in Denmark, Bibliotheque National in Paris, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Argentina, Enfoco in NYC, Camerawork and Nueva Luz magazine.
